Site Guide

This page gives some help to first-time users of the Internet and, further down, gives a few notes about how to use our website.

If you've never used the Internet before

Some definitions first. A website, like a book, is made up of lots of different pages (called web pages) which form a consistent whole. You look at websites using your browser (usually Internet Explorer or Netscape) which you're using now to read this. When you first visit any website you'll normally see the home page of the website (which we call the front page), and this serves firstly as the book's cover and secondly as a short introduction to what the book is about.

Unlike a book, however, you don't have to read the pages in sequential order, but instead you choose which page you want to read at any time by using links (which are sometimes called hyperlinks). A link is usually represented by a word or phrase which is underlined; the underlined words describe what the link refers to. To see the page, use the computer's mouse to move the pointer over the link and it'll change to a hand symbol. When you see the hand, press and release the button on the mouse (use the left button if your mouse has more than one - this is known as clicking or left-clicking) and the relevant page will appear.

If you're looking at a web page containing lots of information, sometimes your browser will only show the first bit of the page. To read the rest of it, you'll have to scroll down, which you can do either by pressing the down arrow key on the keyboard, or by clicking the arrow at the side of the window which looks something like this: .

When you've finished looking at a website, all you need to do is to close the browser window. On a PC you do this by clicking the X at the top right-hand corner of the window (  or  ), and on a Mac, by clicking on the red circle at the top left (  ). If you use a phone line to access the Internet, you might also have to tell your computer to hang up the phone, although sometimes the computer will do this for you automatically.

About our website

While you're at our website you'll see three different sections on the screen:

Site index: The yellow block on the left-hand side. This works like a contents page of a book: it contains a list of all the different web pages on our website to help you find your way around. We've organised the website into several different categories, and within each category there are (usually) several web pages. At the moment you're looking at the site guide web page which is contained within the group called 'About Jali' at the bottom of the list. As you look through the website you'll see that some categories open up to reveal more web pages, and others will close up (just leaving the category heading) if you're looking at a different category.

Main area: this is the bit that you're reading now. The contents will change as you read different web pages.

Shopping list: (in grey underneath the picture on the right-hand side). If you decide to buy anything from our website, you will add it to the shopping list (more on this later).

What do I do next?

Alternatively, you can start browsing around our website by clicking on a link to the left. You might have to scroll up () until you see the full site map - or click here and your computer will do it for you.
