  Assembly and Fixing questions

Are Jali made-to-measure kits easy to fit?

Yes. When your kit arrives all the difficult carpentry tasks have been completed. It will just need to be assembled using the fixings provided and then fixed in place. The only adjustment you may need to make is to the 'side skirtings' which would need to be cut to fit around your existing skirting board. This is called scribing and it can be done with a jigsaw.

We provide full instructions with every made-to-measure kit we supply, but if you want to have a look at them now you can download them (in PDF format) by clicking on one of the following:

Will I need any special tools to put together a Jali kit?

Nothing that you probably do not have in your tool box already: all you'll need is a large and a small Pozidrive or Phillips screwdriver and a saw to cut the side skirting pieces if required. The only other item required is a little PVA or wood glue.

How do I fit a pelmet kit above my window?

  1. Cut the pelmet and top board to the required length
  2. Make up the 'box unit' and paint it
  3. Fit the quick-release brackets to wall (screws and wallplugs are provided)
  4. Attach the box unit to the quick-release brackets.

What's the best way to attach MDF to other surfaces?

In general MDF behaves like any other wood as far as fixing is concerned, and so it depends on the surface to be fixed to. Here are some ideas:

  • In many cases you can use small screws or pins (in which case pre-drilling a pilot hole through the trim is a good idea), then use normal wood filler to cover the screw heads.
  • PVA wood glue is fine when fixing MDF to other wooden surfaces.
  • Construction adhesive (such as Gripfix or No Nails) is very good for fixing edge trims directly onto walls. Use just enough to fit the trim flat to the wall and hold in place with masking tape while it sets.
