Welcome to the latest issue of Designer, the Jali Home Design e-zine.

New products are the focus for this month's Jali newsletter. Our designers have been hard at work to bring you an even bigger choice of made-to-measure furniture.

One of our most popular products is the Jali radiator cabinet which adds a touch of real class to any room by transforming an old radiator into an attractive design feature. But now, for the first time ever, you can order made-to-measure radiator cabinets to fit into any three-sided bay window. Read on for more information or visit the Jali website to find out more.

Also brand new this month are the Jali window screens. These attractive screens, with a choice of styles, are perfect if you think net curtains are a bit stuffy and, like all Jali products, can be made to fit the size of your window.

We are constantly adding to our range of designs! Coming soon is a brand-new made-to-measure TV unit - so it's always worth revisiting the Jali website to check out the latest designs.

Remember, the Jali Designer is an online service which allows you to design and order your own made-to-measure furniture and useful DIY components. Once you have your measurements, it takes just a few minutes to create a design and place your order!

So, why not visit www.jali.co.uk and check out some of our new design ideas?

There's simply no better place to look for made-to-measure furniture!

Kind regards Nicholas Showan
Managing Director

We manufacture our made-to-measure and custom-made furniture in an award-winning factory based just outside Canterbury, in Kent.

Since our formation in 1990 we have won a string of awards - not just for our outstanding made-to-measure furniture but also for our business philosophy. We have been featured many times on TV and our products are also seen regularly on in both films and on TV.

Now the company is featured in a new medium. Kent TV is a new internet TV channel for people living and working in the county. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the TV channel was launched by Kent County Council and includes features on the arts, business, education, tourism and travel.

A recent film, part of a series of films on 'Doing Business in Kent', featured Jali and discussed the benefits of working and doing business in the county. Jali Managing Director Nicholas Showan describes the company, its world-class manufacturing operation and the film shows Jali made-to-measure furniture being produced.

The Jali Designer tool on the website continues to help our customers order made-to-measure furniture for almost any room in the home or office. If you
have any questions to ask regarding using the Jali Designer don't forget that our customer services team are on hand to help.

The new Jali bay window radiator cover is now available on our website, so now you can design and order made-to-measure bay window radiator cabinets online! Whilst normally a job for an experienced joiner or carpenter, the Jali Designer makes it easier and anyone with a reasonable level of DIY experience will be able to order and fit one.

The new Jali window screens are the perfect alternative to net curtains! They are hinged so they can be folded back to the sides of the window, and can be fitted on either side or hinged on both sides to meet in the middle.

There are a number of attractive designs available to choose from - each one can be personalised to fit the size of your window, with different styles, numbers of leaves and a choice of oak veneer or white-primed finishes.

Visit the Jali website for more information.

Check the Jali website for information on our new TV Units - available soon.

Ordering your made-to-measure furniture from Jali is easy thanks to the revolutionary Jali Designer - the online tool that enables you to design and order your own furniture and useful DIY components.

Jali made-to-measure furniture is currently supplied unpainted, although some products are supplied ready primed in white. But painting your Jali made-to-measure furniture is easy, and here are some of the most frequently-asked questions about painting.

What sort of paint should I use?

Any acrylic (water-based) paint will be fine for the top coat. You'll also need a base coat of primer which will make the top coat a truer shade and not affected by the colour of the natural MDF. The primer itself can be water-based, such as an emulsion paint, or a proprietary acrylic primer. Apply the first coat thinly as you do not want paint to build up at the edges.

Can I use special paint effects with Jali?

MDF makes a very good base for paint effects. Try experimenting on a spare piece of MDF first (or on a reverse side that will not be seen). Here's a few ideas:

- Stencils work extremely well on flat surfaces particularly on items such as pelmets, drawer fronts, plain cupboard doors etc.
- Create a sponge effect by using as small amount of paint on the sponge and applying the colour gradually.
- Stripes: use masking tape and paint stripes in contrasting or subtle colours.
- For an antique effect, use crackle glaze, which is a special paint that is applied over the finished surface. As the glaze dries it breaks up to reveal the colour underneath.
- The Victorian art of decoupage: cut images from wrapping or magazines and glue them carefully on to pre-painted surfaces. Leave to dry then seal with a couple of thin coats of varnish.

What's the best way to paint?

For solid areas, brushes and paint rollers work very well. Rather than one thick coat, you can get a better result from applying two or more thinner coats and rubbing down with fine sandpaper in between. In addition, we recommend painting both sides, which helps to prevent bowing as the paint dries out.

With grilles and fretwork, it's best to use a spray paint rather than a brush. This covers the edges without excess paint building up on the front of the grilles. In addition, paint them separately from the rest of the unit if they're part of a radiator cover panel or a cupboard door. If you do use a brush rather than a spray, do all the edges of the holes first with a dabbing action and then finish brushing the face with long even strokes.

When painting edge trims and pelmets, work along the decorative edge first and then paint the front. You could also spray these items or use a small roller for the flat areas.

Can I buy my unit painted?

Currently all our products are supplied unpainted, ready for on-site painting. With a bit of care and attention you can get an excellent finish by hand-painting. See the Painting MDF section for some more tips.
