The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass is better known by most of us Brits as The Northern Lights, the first of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The film has enjoyed international success, reaping fame before it even hit the box office, as 10,000 girls applied to audition for the part of Lyra Belacqua.

Although much of it was filmed in Oxford, Oxfordshire Council were unwilling to allow the crew to film during the day, so if you watch the film closely, see if you can work out which shots were filmed at night then digitally retouched to make it appear to be daytime. However, all the things we made were for indoor sets - particularly the floor of the canteen as shown here.
