About Us

The Jali Factory in Barham, Kent, UK Jali is a high-tech manufacturer of made-to-measure and custom-made furniture based just outside Canterbury, Kent, UK. We manufacture a wide range of fitted furniture and architectural items for private and business customers.

The company was started in 1990 and operates from a purpose-built 24,000 sq ft factory in the heart of the Kent countryside.

All Jali products are made to exact customer sizes using a revolutionary design and manufacturing system. We aim to fill the gap between engaging a bespoke joinery company and a highly-skilled carpenter.

Our unrivalled service, quality and value for money is made possible by our own revolutionary design and manufacturing system. By linking together a wide range of computer-controlled and robotic machinery we are able to eliminate wasted time and materials. This enables us to manufacture bespoke products as if on a dedicated production line - and at the lowest possible price. We have a large production capacity with one of the highest productivity/staff ratios in the industry.

We are an environmentally-aware business and we are constantly working on waste reduction, sustainability and minimising our impact on the environment.

"Jali" is a registered trade mark.

How it works

Our award-winning factory based in Kent enables us to manufacture all sorts of different products quickly and economically. We've combined the efficiency of modern production techniques with the flexibility of a traditional joinery and have developed our own state-of-the-art CNC ("computer numerical control") machines which can produce a huge variety of different items all on the same production line.

What happens when I place a made-to-measure order?

When it's time for your order to be made, each component of the order is automatically sent to the cutting machines. The machines actually adapt each component to the individual details of an order, so for example a wide bookshelf will have more supports than a narrow one to make it stronger.

At each stage of the production process, the computer system shows relevant information to the operator so that they can check important details of the order and progress it efficiently to the next stage. Once each item enters the packing area, a box is automatically made specially for it; this reduces waste and eliminates the need for most other secondary packaging materials like polystyrene foam. The boxes are clearly labelled, barcoded, and at the same time scheduled for delivery on the appropriate delivery service.

Our philosophy

Lean manufacturing

Jali has adopted the principle of lean manufacturing, which looks to identify and remove the causes of waste throughout the manufacturing process and across all parts of the business.

In addition to eliminating waste of materials, Jali also looks to eliminate wasted time - another signifciant cost to the business and, hence, to the customer.

Our factory is arranged so that we do as much as we can to your order in the same place, which saves moving the order between different work areas and ultimately enables us to reduce the cost of manufacture.

The environment

The MDF we use is approved by the FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council). This means that the trees used to make the MDF are planted and managed in an endlessly-sustainable programme.

By grouping lots of orders together and cutting the parts at the same time, we are able to minimise the amount of material that is wasted. Any waste we do create is disposed of on our own premises to reduce the impact of our business on the environment.

We hope that in time the technology will become available for us to use the heat we generate to produce electricity which we can then use to power our factory.
